Detective Joseph Franklin had been in many tough situations before. He had brought down the toughest criminals in his district and was known for going at them with the type of intense determination and courage that none of his fellow officers possessed, which led to his success and many bravery awards. He had gone up against gangs, street thugs, drug lords, the mafia and serial killers, and each and every time he had managed to stay alive and bring them to justice.
But this time was different. As he pushed his back up against the broken wall that was shielding him from the sandstorm of bullets flying his way, he knew that he was cornered. He knew they vastly outnumbered him. He knew the odds were disastrously stacked against him this time. As he clung to the envelope he held to his chest, the envelope containing the documents they were after, the envelope that was the cause of all this…he couldn’t help but feel that perhaps this time his luck had finally run out.
His mind frantically tried to find a way out, violently pushing back all thoughts of fear and defeat as he wiped the beads of sweat from his forehead. He knew that at all costs the contents of this envelope must be protected from them, even at the expense of his own life.
With the split second decision making that had kept him alive all those years, he immediately knew what he had to do. He fell to the ground as the bullets still whizzed past him and dug out his old lighter from his pockets. He looked at the worn out old Zipo and remembered Margaret, his wife, for it was she who had given it to him as a present all those years ago. He thought about how she would react to the inevitable news of his demise. How she would stand bravely and proudly at the funeral as the officers fired off shots and remembered a true hero. A single tear fell from his eyes.
His mind was so clouded that he hadn’t seen the man creeping up behind the pillar and point the gun at him. For the first time in his life he had lost total awareness.
The man pulled the trigger. The shot fired. Joseph died instantly, still clinging to the envelope and the lighter.
The henchman who had fired the fatal shot rushed over and grabbed the envelope happily, knowing fully well that he would be rewarded by the boss for finally killing the no good cop who was such a thorn to them.
He scurried over to the boss who was waiting outside and handed him the envelope and informed him of the news. The boss smiled and opened the envelope.
With his raspy voice he read the contents out loud to all the henchmen and henchwomen….
“the last few weeks played out in my head with the increased clarity of things that were still fresh in my mind, suddenly turning to full colour. My financial state, the interview, and then the unexpected phone call I had received early last week, when an effeminate voice from human resources sang “welcome to the intelicom family! See you next Sunday at 9am SHARP!…”
