Why the hell do I still remember this??

It struck me today that there are a shitload of things I learned at school that I still remember. Things I didn’t ask to learn. Things I will NEVER use.

For example…why, oh why, do I still remember the names of the three ships Columbus used to sail to America: the nina, the pinta and the santa maria??  I find it hard to believe that I would ever be at the grocery store picking out some plump oranges and suddenly get asked this question out of the blue by some stranger in a trench coat (of course, in the case that this actually DOES happen i would be singing a different tune).

Add to that all the math differentiation equations, getting the length of the longest side in a right angle triangle (hypo…hyptono…hypotenuse?) or the full conjugation of the verb ‘etre’ in French. Or the full words to about 3 national anthems? Or Ohms law??…Did I mention Columbus’s ships?

It seems like the only time these things might come in handy is when I have to help my own kids at school.

Dammit, these things are taking up valuable memory space….and I want it back!

Who knows, maybe they will be the million dollar question in “Who wants to be a millionaire”

This is where “literacy” and “Knowledge” come in to play. You studied all this stuff, then decided that they’re not for you and moved to a different branch.

Ohm’s law, used daily by anyone doing electric circuits
Triangulation is used daily by people in geography, gps, architecture ..
You’re using differentiation everytime you look at your speedometer, you just don’t realize it …

Anyway… it’s good to learn, keeps those brain cells occupied with something.

I know the feeling.
I keep wondering if the current universal educational system is in fact the right way to go. It’s like they’re preparing you for all kinds of careers just to be hit by the truth that all fields that have a potential of new development, creativity, and human race added value are all thrown at the bottom of the educational pit. Everybody wants to be a doctor or an engineer in this country. No one wants to be a scientist. No one wants to study about International Law agreements. No one wants to go to space.
Most of them kids now want to study pharmacy, wear a white coat, and stand at the counter of their daddy owned pharmacy and sell aspirin and condoms.

But to each his own Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria.

And as for your memory space…Get gmail. I think it gives you a 6.3 gigs of space now.

Cheers mate.

qwaider: i….guess….

RR: I totally agree, and i think that the reason for this is that the aim of the current educational system isn’t to allow you to find yourself or even achieve happiness; more like to get you nice and ready to join the ‘machine’. And yes, even selling ribbed condoms at your daddy’s pharmacy is part of the ‘machine’.

thanks for the feedback.

There is a program called “are you smarter than a 5th grader?” and they ask you all about the things that we learned when we were young.. maybe you should participate :)

ana

You are very lucky and I don’t think that if you didn’t have this stuff in your mind, that it would necessarily ‘empty space’ for more important stuff. I agree with qwaider person, you’d be a good person to have on a pub quiz team. I wish i could even remember stuff I read last week…sob sob…

O.

I have a huge amount of memory space taken up by useless things. Like this Dutch kids song:
“Poesje Mauw
Kom eens gauw
Ik heb lekkere melk voor jou
En voor mij
Rijstebrij
O wat jeerlijk smullen wij”
N.B. I know nothing about Dutch language and I have nothing in common with singing (not to mention a kids song! in Dutch!). Retarded as can be.
Is there any such job which requires remembering the weirdest useless things? I could come up with a super CV :D
